At TEEG we believe that food security is a basic right and have been working hard to make sure that our Community Markets (formerly referred to as Food Pantries) are full of healthy and nutritious options.
For the convenience of those we serve we now have three Community Markets that help us achieve this goal. In all of our Markets we have recently implemented a program designed by Food Share called Supporting Wellness at Pantries (SWAP). The purpose of this program is to provide healthy options which has allowed us to focus on offering more fresh and frozen produce, dairy options, and frozen meats. To determine healthy levels, we rank food based on total saturated fat, sugars, and sodium.
All Community Markets operate based on a client choice model, which allows individuals and families to make their own selections. While we will provide information and resources that encourage healthy eating, we will not choose the items for those who are utilizing our services. We want to make sure that we are offering all options available, for those who are interested in clean eating, heathier lifestyles, or who have specific dietary needs. We aim to be inclusive and focus on options that are healthy and might be difficult to afford on a fixed income. The option for healthy eating should be accessible for all, and we are prioritizing that in our markets so that everyone can experience the benefits.
